LIHUE — “The men may have the stripes, but we have the power,” said Joye Irwin, treasurer for the Kauai Veterans Museum. “We’re spouses.”
Irwin and other members of the Kauai Veterans Museum board invite people to have fun and honor Kauai women in the military from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Located at 3215 Kapule Highway in Lihue, the Kauai Veterans Museum is located in the Kauai Veterans Center and the Night at the Museum will launch the yearlong tribute to Kauai’s women in the military, said Johnette Chun, adjutant of the Kauai Veterans Council.
The public is invited to the event with donations being accepted at the door to benefit the museum.
People are able to enjoy The Starlighters, book signing by some of Kauai’s authors, a silent auction, food, fashion show, and a no host bar.
Of course, the museum will be open for viewing the military history displays, including a section devoted to women in the military.
Aida Cruz, a trustee for the Kauai Veterans Museum and chair for the event, said a special feature is the paper airplane contests coordinated by Stu Burley.
The Kauai Veterans Museum contains military exhibits dating back to World War I and commemorate the military history of Kauai. Many of the artifacts in the museum come from families of veterans who have fought in our nation’s wars, Jensen said.
Local veterans are available to give tours of the museum’s exhibits, which include collections of captured German and Japanese weapons and flags from WWII, historic uniforms, swords, helmets and military equipment of other wars.
The Kauai Veterans Museum is now open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Admission is free.
