Beware scam call from Jamaica
I received a call on my cellphone with a man telling me I won $2.5 million in the Publisher’s Clearing House contest and that it would be sent to me in the mail. He wanted to verify my phone number and I asked him to give me his phone number so I could call him back so I could make sure this was not a scam. He then swore and hung up. He was calling from Jamaica, (876) 474-4598.

AARP sites underused at tax time
Perhaps people are using the free site offered by the IRS at www.irs.gov for incomes under $58,000. For those needing assistance, however, I want to remind them that there are only a few sessions available between now and tax time. Call AARP at 246-4500 to find one near you.
AARP prepares taxes at no charge and files them electronically.
However, they do not do farms, rental properties, out of state returns, sales of homes, businesses with over $5,000 in expenses or major complicated forms.
Persons under 60 are welcome when time permits though preference is given to seniors and low income filers. Filers must bring ID, Social Security number, 2012 tax return, and all W9s, 1099s, 1098s and G- 49 (if self-employed).

Opposed to site of dairy farm
Protect Mahaulepu, I believe the placement of the proposed dairy is ill advised. I am not against a Kauai dairy, yet it needs to be put it a better location. The problems I can see with this plan is putting it in a flood zone, close to the ocean and upwind of a resort area. The smell and flies will be constant. I am also against using Kikuyu grass for the feed because it is a highly invasive type of weed grass.
Please find a more appropriate spot to build a large dairy. I also wonder what happened to the past plans by Grove Farm to turn all of this farmland into a agricultural park with beef cattle, taro, fruit trees and small crop farms. I applied for some of the land to lease years ago with no luck. It was my fault because I didn’t agree with the lease conditions. They had a layout of the fields with what they wanted planted and were going to create an outlet for the produce, too. Sure sounds better than a stinky mess.

Investigate GMOs, don’t hide behind sports
It sure would be nice if this newspaper did some investigative journalism on some of the big issues on this island, rather than sitting back and facilitating all of this “we say/you say” idiocy. In particular, it is well past time for the paper to do a deep and meaningful investigation on the GMO issue. It should have been done many months ago.
We don’t even seem to be able to agree on something as simple as how many jobs might be lost if the activists had their way. I could have sworn the ag companies put the estimate around 1,200, but Gabrielle Olivier claims it is only 300 (as if that is a small number in a small island community). How is this possible? There can not be multiple truths that are so glaringly disparate.
Surely there must be a Pulitzer Prize awaiting the person who would report some truth and balanced perspective on this issue. Could not someone at The Garden Island news step up to the plate? Or are you hiding behind a gazillion sporting events that you feel are more important?
