LAWAI — Six palm trees came down Monday on the property of Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai.
The estimated 70-year-old trees were beginning to cause a safety hazard, according to management. They have lined the driveway as a landmark to the entrance of Lawai since the mortuary opened in 1949.
“These trees were so high that it’s hard to get somebody to maintain the dry branches,” said Patrick Contrades, manager. “The dry branches have a tendency to fall and we were becoming worried.”
Four trees were removed in past years for disease or similar safety issues, he added. The dry branches tend to fall and people are walking back and forth from parking to the building on a daily basis.
“It was a threat to the customers,” he said.
There are four trees remaining.
