KALAHEO — Kaulupono guard Monique Lorenzo fired off 17 points and low post Taegan Keep added 16 points to lead Kaulupono to a 46-18 win over the Tigers on Monday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Roycie Faye came up with four second period points to help the Division 3 girls team and Apryl Grande finished with three points.
Shaelynn Erickson, Tatiana Acain and China Yasay each added pairs to the win.
Lexie Warnock and Emi Ramelb each netted six points to lead the Tigers’ effort with Damia Cain and Risa Whetsel each finishing with pairs.
The game was one of three played in Division 3, or youth in the seventh and eighth grade, during the county’s youth basketball spring league.
Papalina BC fielded two teams on Monday, finishing with the “B” team taking a 43-8 win over the Kamikaze and its “A” team falling to Team Lihue “A,” 37-19.
“Basically, what we did is push up the Division 2, or youth in the fifth and sixth grade,” said Clyde Vito, a Papalina coach. “We have several seventh graders on the “A” team as well.”
Papalina’s “B” team lit up the nets early. Taylon Yadao fired off a dozen points, including a pair from outside the three-point arc to lead the 43-8 win.
Overall, Papalina “B” netted three treys. The remaining three-ball came from Gunnar Burkman who drilled the net in the second period toward his game-total seven points.
Trey Taba lit up a string of field goals in the second half and ended the night with eight points, followed by Ryan Banasihan with six points. Jaykob Nakaahiki-Young and Nainoa Klindt each netted four points in the win.
Takeshi Komar took the lead for the Kamikaze with six first-half points in the game which belied its score as the redshirts displayed crisp fundamentals.
But little miscues in ball handling, or a less-than-perfect pass, was the cue for the quick Papalina “B” squad, who capitalized on the Kamikaze glitches.
Low post Ben Brady finished with a pair, complementing Komar on the inside.
Papalina “A” relied on the long ball to stay close to Team Lihue “A” in its loss. The orange shirts fired off three from outside the three-point arc.
Makana Tavita, strong guard for Papalina “A,” fired off one in the first period en route to his game-total six points.
Nick Herbig also fired off a trey toward his six points. Wade Pimsaguan fired off a trey and a pair from Kona Asano in the second half rounded out the effort.
Team Lihue “A” also used the three-ball to create its lead. Junah Corpuz fired off one in the opening stanza to give Lihue a 7-5 bulge at the buzzer.
Corpuz finished with seven points along with Knyll Ganotisi who also launched a three-ball in the sixth period to ice the win.
AJ Apalla, getting the nod for high-point honors, fired off a trey in the third frame toward his game-total 11 points.
Grant Urmatam and Shawn Paglinawan ended with four points apiece with pairs from Charles Butay and Vhincent Agreda rounding out the victories.
The league continues with games on Thursday and Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
