LIHUE — A 79-year-old male visitor died Thursday while snorkeling in waters fronting Lawai Beach Resort in Poipu.
The Arkansas man was snorkeling about 11:30 a.m. when a family member noticed he was missing. He was found unresponsive in the water a short time later.
Bystanders pulled him to shore and began performing CPR until firefighters and medics arrived. Medics transported him to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Staff of Life’s Bridges were called in to assist members of the victim’s family at Wilcox. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
This is Kauai’s first drowning this year.
Ocean safety officials remind the public that a high surf advisory is in effect for all north and west-facing shores of Kauai until 6 a.m. Sunday.
