After sundown on March 20 — the eve of the vernal equinox (in the Northern Hemisphere) — Bahais throughout the world will celebrate the start of the Bahai New Year called Naw-Ruz. On Kauai, the celebration will take place in Koloa.
Naw-Ruz, which means “New Day,” is celebrated on the first day of spring. “It is a time of joyful gatherings, with the darkness of winter coming to an end and the reappearance of light, warmth and the beauty of spring’s flowers, a day of new beginnings — of change and hope,” said a press release.
However, for Bahais, Naw Ruz also has deep spiritual significance. Naw Ruz marks the end of the 19-day Bahai Fast, which is a period of reflection and profound spiritual reinvigoration for Baha’is.
The Bahais of Kauai and their friends will gather Thursday with food, music and games and storytelling to ring in the New Year.
