Hawaiian festivities are continuing as part of Prince Kuhio Celebration.
Well known as a state holiday annually on March 26 to mark his birthday, Kauai’s Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole who was born in Koloa 143 years ago this month. He was heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii in the late 19th century.
Throughout the celebration, events will be held in Poipu, Eleele, Lihue and Wailua and include a plethora of free activities.
Activities for this week include:
Saturday
• 8 a.m. — Prince Kuhio Celebration: 43rd Annual Long Distance Canoe Race — the Men’s Division will paddle from Kalapaki Beach to just outside Kukuiula Harbor. At 10:30 a.m., the Women’s teams will paddle from just outside of Kukuiula Harbor to Salt Pond Park.
• 10 a.m. — Prince Kuhio Commemorative Ceremonies with the Royal Order of Kamehameha at Prince Kuhio Park — Observe the protocol of honoring Prince Kuhio’s birthday with hookupu (gifts), hula (dance), and oli (chant).
• 7 p.m. — Torchlighting Ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa — Hawaiian music duo and keiki (children’s) hula.
• 8:15 p.m. Prince Kuhio Celebration: Ledward Kaapana and Mike Kaawa Concert at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa — Hear the slack key guitarists who are considered masters of Hawaiian music.
March 23
• 8:30 to 9 a.m. — Opening Protocol and Taiko Drumming at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa.
• 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Cultural demonstrations and crafts at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa.
March 24
