WAILUA — Kauai’s Trevor Kua finished with a 1-under par 35 on the back nine to jump into the lead Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf match at the Wailua Golf Course.
Rebounding from a third place standing following the front nine, Kua’s 1-under par put him in the leader’s spot for the boys and helped the Kauai High School boys claim a 21-stroke win over Kapaa High School, 320 (77-80-81-82) to 341 (78-78-91-94).
Island School rounded out the boys team scoring at 407 (93-96-103-115).
On the girls’ course, Kapaa’s Naea Oda continued to set the pace, finishing the round at 79 (41-38) as an individualist.
Kauai High School’s Hiilani Alana continued to set the pace for the Red Raider girls, finishing with a 90 (44-46) to help lead the team to a 288 (90-94-104) over Waimea’s 323 (98-99-126).
Following Alana’s lead, Janae Park (50-44-94) and Kiri Oshiro (52-52-104) all scored for the Red Raiders.
Dillyn Sakai (57-56-113) and Sharae Cua (55-50-105) were other Kauai girls on the course who played under threatening skies and humid conditions.
Kawena Warren led the Menehune wahine with a 98 (53-45), just a stroke ahead of Samantha Nichols (49-50-99). Bailee Taeza (62-64-126) rounded out the threesome.
Kari Whitworth carded a 94 (49-45) as the individualist from Island School.
Following Kua’s 77 (42-35), the Red Raider boys got an 80 (41-39) from Jamie Amimoto, an 81 (40-41) from Keith Jose, the Raider boys leader at the crossing, and an 82 (41-41) from Jacob Viquelia whose father was among the Saturday gallery.
Other Red Raiders on the course included Vance Tokia (50-46-96), Jordan Serrano (52-42-94), Jeremy Felizardo (48-49-97), and Ian Castro (60-63-123).
With one of its scoring players not participating, the Kapaa Warriors got their lead from Kainalu Gandia (41-37) and Bryden Salvador (38-40) who each finished tied at 78. Mitchell Alves (45-46-91) filled in the Kapaa No. 3 spot followed by Sequoia Logan (47-47-94).
Other Warrior golfers on the course included Jonathan Paleka (49-46-95), Zack Knight (55-44-99), Tyshawn Cain (50-50-100) and Dylan Desilva (59-58-117).
Michael Miller, earning consideration standards at the distance events during the KIF qualifying track meet, set the pace for the Island School boys, finishing with a 93 (49-44). Jacob Dysinger finished three strokes off Miller’s pace at 96 (48-48) followed by Adam Sclafani (52-51-103) and Kilikai Ahuna (53-62-115).
Wesley Carter-Fujinaka was the sole boys individualist from Waimea High School, ending the day at 96 (49-47).
The KIF golf matches continue Saturday when the golfers return to the Kauai Lagoons Golf Club and the first group teeing off from 12:30 p.m.
