KAPAA – Kapaa High School’s boys volleyball team won straight sets to finish the first round without a loss with a 3-0 win over Island School Friday night.
Kapaa (6-0) won by scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-21.
“I think it comes back to experience and senior leadership,” said Warriors head coach Kapule Kaona. “We have seven total seniors on the team … We kind of saw these boys grow up in the program so it’s nice to see the fruits of our labor and hard work we’ve been putting in.”
Kapaa senior libero Jonathan Paleka said the team’s seniors are especially driven from losing last year’s KIF championship game.
“We didn’t want to lose two years in a row,” Paleka said. “We kind of have that fire in us to win.”
Paleka added since the team has yet to lose, it is a goal to stay that way through the rest of the season.
“It keeps us going. (Staying) undefeated is not something easy to do,” he said. “It’s a goal of ours to keep that perfect record.”
Island School head coach Kaipo Kealalio said despite the record (0-6), the team has steadily improved and continues to work hard.
“We’ve been up and down just trying to figure out our lineups. We’ll see how it goes in the second round and hopefully the guys will be fired up,” the Voyagers coach said. “We have a lot to work on … but the boys work hard.”
Island School senior middle Emanuel Zafirides said the team did some things well in the game and hopes to improve on them in the second round.
“We did good on our passing and we had some digs,” he said. “What we need to improve on is that we just got to get a better mindset. Come into the game ready to work, hit some balls, dig some ball, play defense, all of that.
“We only have six games left. We’re starting to realize that so we got to start picking it up,” he added.
The second round will begin on Tuesday. Kapaa will play at Waimea and Island School will play at Kauai. The junior varsity games start at 5 p.m. and the varsity games will start no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
