KAPAA — The Warriors needed one extra inning to complete the comeback.
Kapaa High School’s baseball team defeated Kauai 2-1 at home on Wednesday.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, Red Raiders relief pitcher Tyler Manibog walked Warriors right fielder Grant Mitchell. Center fielder AJ Cummings scored the winning run for Kapaa.
“We’ll take whatever we can get,” said Kapaa head coach Bryan Aiwohi. “When you put a pitcher on the mound that’s been squating for seven innings, it’s kind of to our advantage. It’s going to be hard for him to throw strikes and we were hoping to take advantage of that. It went our way.”
Both starting pitchers, Kauai’s Cal Koga and Kapaa’s Nick Tabura, each allowed one earned run.
Warriors first baseman Rashaan “Turtle” Kuhaulua, who later relieved Tabura on the mound, tied up the score in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single.
“We had runners on third for several innings. We just needed that one big hit,” Aiwohi said. “Turtle battled on that one and got that hit.
“Cannot say we got lucky. We just took advantage of the right situation and scored that run,” he added.
Kauai’s only run came in the third inning. With two outs and two runners on, third baseman Micah Layosa hit an RBI single. Center fielder Pono Bukoski scored the run.
Kauai (5-2, 0-1 in second round) will host Waimea on Saturday for a doubleheader at Vidinha Stadium. The first game will begin at 10 a.m.
Kapaa (4-5, 3-0 in second round) will play Waimea at home at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
