WAIMEA — It was a must win, and win they did.
Kauai High School, facing a do-or-die situation to force a playoff game Tuesday against Kapaa, capitalized on a shorthanded Waimea volleyball team to sweep its series in three sets Saturday night, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-20.
Kauai capitalized early, lead by Tyrus Fernandez and Reggie McFadden who made things miserable for Waimea’s defense in the second game.
Waimea pulled close in the second set after dropping the first one, but Kauai was able to pull away in the end.
During the third set, Kauai called on some of its reserves, Braeden Armstrong, Justin Poskin and Kekoa Tecson each getting in on the action.
Waimea’s also got some new faces onto the court in the season’s final game, such as Noah Alejandro and Haku Barriga.
Earlier in the night, Kauai walked off with a 2-1 win in the junior varsity series, 25-16, 25-20 and 23-25 during the Menehune’s Senior Night.
With its varsity win, Kauai will face Kapaa in a playoff match Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m. at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa.
