LIHUE — Kauai residents have a chance to weigh in on the future of transportation on Kauai tonight.
The state Department of Transportation will host a public meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue.
In conjunction with the Statewide Federal-Aid Highways 2035 Transportation Plan, DOT is developing a regional long-range transportation plan for Kauai — last updated in the late 1990s.
“This current update embraced the district’s unique values, identified its existing and future needs, and provided guidance in setting funding priorities,” states a meeting announcement.
DOT officials will share both draft plans and allow public feedback.
“In the future, traffic is expected to increase due to a larger population, more jobs, and new land developments on Kauai,” states the Kauai draft plan. “Volumes on Kaumualii Highway between Lihue and Kalaheo are expected to increase by over 30 percent by the year 2035.”
The draft also addresses Kauai’s public transit system, improving safety for non-motorized modes of transportation and creating bypass roads and alternate routes.
