Young island talent will take to the court Saturday.
Again.
The Hooikaika 12s youth volleyball team participated in a special one-day mini tournament organized by Wayne Doliente, a Kauai Interscholastic Federation volleyball official, at the All Saints Gym in Kapaa over the weekend.
“This isn’t anything more than to be able to get the different clubs on the island to play volleyball,” Doliente said. “The clubs are always looking for playing time.”
Other teams included the Hooikaika 12s, Na Koa, coached by Carie Inouye, Pookela 13s played in a three-team round robin format.
Older teams, including Na Koa, Kauai Warriors, Ka Ulukoa 16s and Pookela 16s took the floor too, playing in a two-set format, first to 25, or a 15-minute time limit.
Peter Kruse, coach of the Hooikaika 12s, said all of the girls on the Hooikaika 12s have been playing together for several years.
“We only have one girl who is in her first year with the club,” Kruse said. “There’s one girl who’s been in the club for six years and several more who have four years of experience.
“This is the team which won third place at the Haile tournament on the Big Island,” Kruse said. “It was contested during the college spring break and the girls, after winning third place, were so excited, they forgot their plaque and medals. The organizers had to mail it to us.”
Another tournament will unfold at 3 p.m. Saturday at the All Saints Gym in Kapaa.
