Waimea softball girls exploded for nine hits, including a home run, a trio of triples, and a pair of doubles in the fifth inning to take an 18-2 win over Kapaa Saturday at the Kapaa High School facility.
The Menehune followed the explosive opener of the twinbill with an 8-6 win in the nightcap to sweep its series. During the opener, Menehune hurler Kiani Kamakea held the Warriors to just one hit, a late-game single from Selena Morita in the fifth inning.
Morita scored Kapaa’s second run on a fielder’s choice play on Ariel Cummings.
During the one-hitter, Kamakea struck out three Warrior hitters, including two in the opening inning while giving up six walks.
The Menehune defense kept Kapaa off the scoreboards until the fourth inning when Keisha Aki walked with one out and scored on a Kailana Kaiminaauao hit.
Waimea got on the boards early, pushing three runs on one hit in the first, adding a run in the second and third innings before exploding for 13 runs on nine hits, including a two-run homer from Alyssa Miyamoto with just one out.
Kamakea helped herself in the batter’s box, finishing with a single, double and triple with four RBI and scoring twice in the opening game.
Catcher Karylee Rye Malapit ended the day scoring three times with five RBI on a double and a single to lead the Waimea hitting.
Undaunted, the Warriors returned to the field, and took a 2-1 lead in the second inning of the second game behind an RBI triple from Cummings.
The Menehune answered in the third, pushing two runs on three hits when Bailey San Agustine-Nordmeier cranked a two-run triple that scored Sienna Santiago and Kamakea.
Kapaa deadlocked the match, 3-3 in the fifth when Cummings, singling first, came home on a Kalia Kaui play for the Warriors’ second out of the frame.
Waimea iced the win in the sixth inning, pushing five runs across the plate on four hits.
With two outs, Malapit came up with an RBI single to left field, scoring Saecha Oyamot who got to first on an error. Shania Rita singled followed by Santiago singling.
Kamakea got on board on an error.
San Agustine-Nordmeier singled to push another run home before the inning ended on a 8-3 note.
The Warriors answered on its last breath with three runs on two hits and a Menehune error as Cummings walked with two outs.
Stealing second, Cummings cross on an Autumn Begley RBI single. Kaui walked followed by Aki pushing Begley home with an RBI single to right field.
A Waimea error got Kaiminaauao on base, but not before Kaui scored Kapaa’s final run in the 8-6 Waimea win.
Cummings had the hot bat for Kapaa in the nightcap with a triple and a single and an RBI, scoring twice.
San Agustine-Nordmeier topped the Waimea hitting in the nightcap, finishing with a triple, two singles and four RBI.
Kapaa next travels to Isenberg Park Wednesday to face the Kauai Red Raiders in a single game starting at 5:30 p.m.
