LIHUE — The Department of Land and Natural Resources has announced an open fishing season for rainbow trout in the Kokee Public Fishing Area beginning June 14.
Anglers may fish daily from June 14 to Sept. 28, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“Trout fishing at Puu Lua Reservoir in Kokee has always been a popular family activity, and anglers will have a chance to catch trout from last year’s stocking,” DLNR Chairman William Aila said.
Last year, 3,798 anglers caught 25,821 trout. The largest trout caught measured 12.75 inches in length and weighed 1 pound, 1 ounce.
The DLNR said fishing was good last year after more than 33,000 juvenile trout were restocked in the Puu Lua Reservoir in 2012. Fishing is expected to be better this year than last as more trout were stocked in the reservoir in 2013.
Anglers must have a valid state of Hawaii freshwater game fishing license. Licenses may be obtained at DLNR offices, at select fishing supply stores, license agents or purchased online at http://www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar.
The daily bag limit for this year will be 12 rainbow trout per licensed angler.
Anglers shall fish with only one pole and line, or one line using one lure or one baited hook attached to the single line.
The use of treble hooks is prohibited. The launch or use of any vessel or floatable object, motorized, non-motorized or wind-powered in the Puu Lua Reservoir is prohibited. No camping is allowed in the vicinity of Puu Lua Reservoir due to risk of fire hazard.
The complete rules on fishing for rainbow trout at Kokee PFA can be found on the Division of Aquatic Resources website or by calling your local DAR office.
Anglers should be aware that a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for driving to all fishing areas, including Puu Lua Reservoir, the streams and ditch systems.
All anglers are required to check in and out at established check-in stations.
