Hoanoaiwa Brun knows Jesus.
And he should.
After all, the Hanapepe man is playing the role of God’s son for the third straight year in “Indestructible Life” put on by King’s Chapel Kauai.
“To be a follower of him, to actually step into the role like that, it’s really eye opening,” he said during a break from rehearsals Tuesday night.
“You set yourself apart, get out of who you really are, and what you really want to be,” Brun said. “It’s more of putting yourself in somebody else’s shoes.”
About 100 cast and crew have spent months readying the production, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the King’s Chapel in Hanamaulu.
The two-hour musical tells the biblical story of the Last Supper, Christ’s betrayal by Judas, the crucifixion of Christ and his Resurrection. It’s the third year in a row the church has performed “Indestructible Life,” written by Pastor Chris Davis.
The community is welcome to attend the free performances at the dome just off Kuhio Highway in Hanamaulu.
“We want everybody to be able to come,” said music minister Vickie Franks. “We feel like this is a great outreach.”
Franks said the dancing, singing and lighting are all top notch and the show is coming together well. Adults, teens and children will take the stage. At times, their performances take them right into the audience.
“We really try to do our best to go above and beyond,” she said.
It delivers a modern theatrical version of the keystone of Christianity. There’s laughter, there’s drama and there’s tears. In the end, there’s great joy.
“It is the true Easter story,” Franks said. “It’s something that will change lives.”
Key to the show’s success is the cast, of course, but they weren’t necessarily chosen based on their ability to sing and dance.
“It’s how they live their life,” she said. “When they play a part, people can see something in them.”
Brun said that he, along with others of the cast and crew of “Indestructible Life,” started to see things differently, “not only with your life, but with others.”
“It’s encouraged me to be a better person,” he said.
As for playing Jesus once again, Brun believes he has it down.
“I hope so,” he said.
