POIPU — Joe Wilmot built his latest store in less than two weeks.
“We dropped in on the ‘Art in Fashion’ event several weeks ago, and now, we’re opening Mahina, Sunday,” Wilmot, the owner of Mahina boutique with Jody Curtin, said. “This will be our seventh store after starting the first boutique in 2006.”
The opening marks the first of Mahina boutiques on Kauai.
Founded on Maui, Mahina has six stores across three islands — Maui, Oahu, Hawaii — and has become a much sought-after brand in Hawaii, states a release from The Shops at Kukuiula.
Voted “Maui’s Best” for the past six years straight, the “affordable beachy chic boutique” offers perfectly edited collections of soft, breezy sundresses, wearable tops, and accessories in a welcoming environment for women who love to shop.
“It was our goal to create a store which evokes a feeling of shopping your most fashion-forward friend’s closet,” Wilmot said. “We’ve always tried to keep things from being too expensive so that dress that you just have to have is never out of reach.”
Additionally, he buys only enough to last a week which means there are not a lot of copies out there.
“Mahina makes an excellent addition to the growing collection of fashion retailers here at The Shops at Kukuiula,” said Helaine Perel, the Real Estate Manager of The Shops at Kukuiula. “We couldn’t be more delighted to welcome them into our ohana. This has been an exciting year of growth for The Shops at Kukuiula. Mahina is the fourth store in the past 12 months to open its doors to our community and we’re looking forward to announcing more additions in the coming months.”
The new store in Poipu will be led by store manager Hope Johnson and boasts more than 1,300 square feet of total retail footage.
“We are particularly excited about Sunday’s opening,” Wilmot said. “Not only will this be our biggest store yet, it also means that Mahina is now on all major Hawaiian Islands.”
Mahina will follow The Shops at Kukuiula’s operating schedule of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.
