LIHUE — A two-car crash on Kuhio Highway in Kilauea Thursday afternoon resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
The collision happened shortly after 4 p.m., near the Pili Road junction, when a Chevrolet SUV attempted to make a turn from the southbound lane and was struck by an oncoming Ford truck.
One of the Chevy’s four occupants, 58-year-old George Nielson of Washington state, died as a result of his injuries. A 62-year-old female passenger remains in critical condition at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
The driver of the SUV, 61, and another female passenger, 56, both suffered non-life threatening injuries. Medics transported them to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where they remain in stable condition.
All of the occupants in the Chevy were visitors from Washington state.
The driver of the Ford truck, a 55-year-old Kilauea man, did not sustain injuries.
Officers directed traffic onto Kolo Road for roughly five hours following the crash to allow the Kauai Police Department to conduct an on-scene investigation and clear the scene.
The incident remains under police investigation, but speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the cause of the crash.
It is Kauai’s third traffic-related fatality of 2014.
