LIHUE — The Kauai County Prosecuting Attorney has assigned a new deputy to the Kapaa bank robbery case, and the trial date was continued Tuesday in 5th Circuit Court.
County First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Takata appeared for the state. He said fellow deputy prosecutor Melinda Mendes would be taking over the case against Joshua Carlsen, 36, of Kapaa, who is accused of holding up the Bank of Hawaii-Kapaa branch on Jan. 28.
With the trial scheduled for May 5, Takata asked the court for a new trial date.
State Deputy Public Defender Samuel Jajich objected to the request.
Chief Judge Randal Valenciano granted the state’s motion to continue the trial date of June 30.
Carlsen remains in custody at Kauai Community Correction Center on $250,000 bail. He is charged with second-degree robbery, and while in the course of committing theft, threatened imminent use of force but did not show a weapon.
