LIHUE — As the National Tropical Botanical Garden celebrates its 50th year, it’s inviting moms and their families to a special “Moms in McBryde – Garden Renewal Tour” on Sunday.
NTBG’s anniversary comes at a time when exciting changes and new features are being introduced to its flagship garden in the Lawai Valley on the South Shore.
A special tour showing off some of these improvements has been developed just for this day, when NTBG welcomes all to get an insider’s view of the McBryde Garden for a suggested donation of $10. Children 12 and younger get in for free.
The first tram into the valley will depart from the South Shore Visitors Center beginning at 9 a.m., with trams regularly transporting kamaaina and visitors into the McBryde Garden on a first-come, first-served basis. Trams will run into the valley until noon and return to the Visitors Center until 3 p.m.
All will enjoy the breathtaking drive from high above Poipu coastal cliffs and a dramatic journey into the Lawai Valley, disembark near the garden’s recently completed hale (traditional Hawaiian house) and follow a lush streamside trail.
The walk will conclude at the new and fascinating “biodiversity trail,” which is under development. The adjacent meadow will be the scene for entertainment and keiki activities. Handmade crafts by NTBG volunteers and anniversary logo items will be available for purchase, as well as food and drinks.
Families are invited to bring a picnic blanket or mat so they can enjoy the festivities while relaxing in the garden. No coolers are allowed.
Participants are encouraged to wear suitable footwear and may wish to bring sun protection. Backpack child carriers are recommended instead of lightweight, collapsible strollers.
NTBG’s South Shore Visitors Center is at 4425 Lawai Road in Poipu, across from Spouting Horn. Info: 742-2433 or visit calendar.ntbg.org.
