LIHUE — A 6-year-old boy sustained minor injuries Thursday after being struck by a pickup in Hanamaulu while riding his bicycle home from school.
The accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. at the intersection of Kuhio Highway and Laulima Street. The boy was riding his bike southbound on the sidewalk along the highway and was attempting to make a left turn onto Laulima, when he rode next to a vehicle that also attempted to make a turn, according to county spokeswoman Sarah Blane
“Upon noticing the boy, the 61-year-old driver stopped his vehicle, but bumped the child with the car, causing him to fall to the ground,” she wrote in an email.
The boy’s mother, Ashley Brun, was at the scene shortly after the incident to pick up her son. She said it is a perfect example of why she makes her son wear a helmet.
“He’s fine,” she said, before driving her son to the hospital. “He did hurt his shoulder.”
The boy was released after being treated at Wilcox Hospital.
A resident said she heard commotion from inside her home and came out to make sure everything was OK. She described the youngster as a “good boy” for wearing his helmet and said he appeared to be more scared than injured.
Blane said the vehicle and its driver did not sustain damages or injury, and no citations were issued at the scene.
