Please slow down!
This is an open letter to all the people driving entirely way too fast on Kuhio Highway.
What is the rush? This is Kauai, please slow down. Today, I was in the southbound lane trying to turn left into Kilauea where Healthy Hut is and was nearly rear-ended by someone coming behind me so fast that he did not have time to slow down even though I gave a left turn signal well in advance. Maybe he was busy texting and didn’t notice my turn signal but I thought for sure he was going to hit me until he swerved to the right at the last minute.
Please drivers, let’s slow down, especially in commercial and residential districts. Hasn’t there been enough carnage on our highway already this year? Perhaps blinking yellow lights placed in problem intersections would help or roundabouts for continuous traffic flow. I don’t know what the answer is but I know what the problem is and that is that people just drive too fast. The beauty of Kauai is that we take the time to slow down and smell the plumerias. Let’s not tarnish that experience with traffic casualties and collision statistics.

The milk factory in Poipu? It gets a little old having to repeat the same thing over and over but it’s true: “It’s the economy, stupid.”
Profit trumps people every time. In the heartless corporate state what ever positive qualities are destroyed mean nothing if the dollars are there. Kauai will be left with the mess — just as New Zealand was — the milk factory will haul in the money.
All some people do when they look at land is see dollar signs. There are others who see life. Who see beauty. Who see fertile soil feeding and nourishing healthy human beings.

Defenders of the Syngenta/Dow/DuPont legal assault on Kauai claim that there is no evidence that cancer or birth defect rates are higher on the West Side than on other parts of the island.
They are correct. Hawaii lumps all of its communities together when gathering its cancer and birth defects statistics, so there is no way to know if there are West Side clusters. But that doesn’t mean that clusters don’t exist. We just can’t tell if they’re there.
