LIHUE — The rains couldn’t dampen the excitement of Kauai High School football fans Saturday when the Red Raiders hosted its annual Red-and-White spring football game at Vidinha Stadium.
Ahead of the game, Kauai head coach Tommy John Cox invited keiki in the community to join the ranks of the football program in learning points of the game, the young, aspiring football players blending in with the junior varsity and varsity teams in stretching and warmups.
“I don’t think anyone else does this,” said Manny Henriques, longtime Kauai Interscholastic Federation football supporter. “This is something new the Kauai High School program is trying out.”
The spring game wraps up spring practice for high school teams in the KIF and combines with a fundraising event for the schools’ respective football programs.
“We’re looking pretty good,” said Kalawaia Judd, a returning player who donned the quarterback outfit for both the Red and White varsity squads. “We’re in good shape for the fall training.”
Kapaa High School hosted its Green-and-White spring game last Saturday at Vidinha Stadium, and Waimea High School will close the spring series with its Blue-and-White game Friday at Hanapepe Stadium starting at 7 p.m.
Waimea athletic director Jon Kobayashi said tickets are available from any of the Waimea players or at the gate for a $10 donation. The ticket comes with admission to the game and a smoked meat and rice plate.
Diane Nitta, the KIF secretary, said the Hawaii High School Athletic Aassociation athletic directors will be meeting in June to discuss the fall schedule.
