HONOLULU — Waimea High School’s softball defeated Aiea High of Oahu on Thursday to advance to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state championship game.
The Menehune girls scored three runs in each the first and fifth innings in the 7-2 victory at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
“The girls are hitting the ball pretty good and they’re executing,” said Waimea head coach Teddy Perreira in a phone interview.
Waimea junior starting pitcher Kiana Kamakea pitched seven innings. She had three strikeouts and allowed eight hits, two earned runs and three walks.
“Kiana is throwing really good. She threw a two-hitter yesterday and a three-hitter today,” Perreira said. “She’s keeping the batters off-balance and she’s mixing up her pitches.”
Third baseman Alyssa Miyamoto hit a three-run homer in the first inning.
In the previous round on Wednesday, Waimea defeated McKinley High of Oahu 19-0 at the Central Oahu Regional Park.
With an 8-0 lead, the Menehune wahine scored 11 more runs in the fifth inning to end the game via the 10-run mercy rule.
Kamakea allowed just two hits in the five innings on the mound. She also scored four runs.
Sophomore Saecha Padasdao-Oyamot had three hits and three RBIs.
Senior Taylor Lazaro scored three runs.
Waimea will play Nanakuli High of Oahu today at 5 p.m. for the state title.
“If they stay disciplined, they’ll be OK,” Perreira said.
Kapaa High School’s softball team lost twice and was eliminated from the tournament.
The Warriors lost 16-3 to Saint Francis School of Honolulu on Tuesday and lost to Waialua of Oahu 9-8 on Wednesday.
