Waimea High School’s softball team enjoyed a successful year.
The Menehune (11-0-1 KIF regular season) won the Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship and were runner-up at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state tournament. In addition, they have the player of the year and the coach of the year, too. Now, they make up a majority of this year’s all-star team.
Seven of the 10 all-stars that were voted by the KIF coaches represent Waimea.
“I feel great that they made all-stars,” said Waimea softball head coach Teddy Perreira. “The other coaches see they can play the game really well.”
Menehune pitcher Kiani Kamakea was named KIF Player of the Year as voted by the league’s coaches.
“It feels good. I didn’t expect it,” Kamakea said.
Perreira said his pitcher was deserving of the award because she performed well on the mound and in the batter’s box all season.
The Waimea coach was also voted KIF Coach of the Year.
“I got a great coaching staff. To me, the whole coaching staff is coach of the year,” he said. “It’s not just me. They do a lot.”
With the player of the year and a few all-stars in the fold, Perreira said he hopes next season will be just as successful as this year.
“Throughout the whole season, they do not give up … (We’ll) just keep working hard. Hopefully, we will get some young freshmen in to help the program,” he said. “The JV program helps us a lot. They get a lot of playing time before they step up to varsity and they play good.”
Kamakea also said she’ll be working to improve upon this season’s successes in hopes of an even better season her senior year.
“(I will be) working on pitching and hitting … We’ll work hard and try to get back to states,” she said.
