LIHUE — Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island may have had the Harlem Globetrotters, but on Kauai, residents and scores of young people were treated to a visit by the Harlem Ambassadors Saturday at the Kauai High School gym.
Presented in part by the Aston Aloha Beach Resort, the County of Kauai Department of Parks and Recreation, Leadership Kauai, and the Kauai Athletic Club, the quintet of basketball wizardry took the floor of the Raiderdome.
“At our shows, we want the kids to know they’re part of our team, too,” said Lade Majic, coach of the Harlem Ambassadors, thrilled with the eager hordes of young people who followed the five stars between quarters and the half.
Proceeds from the event will support leadership development programs and scholarships at Leadership Kauai, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to ensure a source of qualified leaders for Kauai’s future.
Lenny Rapozo, the director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, coordinated a Kauai All-Star squad which was led by Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., Rapozo, Peter Rayno and a host of high school and community basketball coaches.
Throughout the night, the Kauai All Stars stayed close, but whenever Chris Acoba appeared to ignite the Kauai effort, the Harlem Ambassadors somehow created a diversion leading to dunks to stay in the lead.
