Christian Sarmiento of Kauai High School and Kawena Warren of Waimea High School are favorites heading into the Island Movers Hawaii High School Athletic Association track and field championships which will unfold Friday and Saturday at the Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus facility on Oahu.
Sarmiento, a senior, is ranked No. 4 in the boys long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 9.75 inches for the event, according to a top performance report which includes student-athlete performances from some of the major participating schools around the state.
Warren, a senior, also earns a No. 4 ranking in the girls 100 meter hurdles event, an event she dominated throughout the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season and earned a medal during the recent Honolulu Marathon Invitational on Oahu. She recorded a season-best 15.62-second run during the KIF championships, a run better than her medal run on Oahu.
Following her in the 100 meter hurdles, Waimea’s Leann Lopez, finishing No. 2 in the KIF for the event, gets a No. 24 spot on her 17.59 run followed by Kauai’s Natalie Nishioka, a consistent challenger throughout the season in the event, getting No. 26 on a 17.68 run.
Warren also gets the nod at No. 23 in the girls 300 meter hurdles event with a 50.60 run while Delos Reyes gets the No. 21 spot in the boys 300 meter hurdles on his 42.32 run.
Chan Hsu of Island School, winning the 1,500 meter run during the KIF championships, gets a No. 10 nod in the event on her run of 5 minutes, 4.55 seconds, a consideration run. In the event, Hsu is challenged by Kauai junior Krista Schnackenberg who gets a No. 18 nod on her 5:12.85 run.
Schnackenberg also picks up the No. 18 spot in the girls 800 meter run with her 2:28.28.
The girls high jump event is filled with KIF student-athletes as five, three from Waimea and two from Island School, are in the Top 30 rankings. Warren leads the field at No. 9 with a 5-00 jump followed by team mate Talia Young getting No. 15 on a 4-10 leap. Moeko Fukada and Allison Culiney of Island School get the No. 23 and No. 24 spots, respectively, both girls clearing 4-08. Taylor Gaspar of Waimea, also clearing 4-08, gets the No. 27 spot.
Culiney, Fukada and Young also get looks in the girls triple jump where Culiney is No. 24 on a 33-07 leap followed by Fukada at No. 25 on a 33-03.50 jump and Young getting No. 36 at 32-02.50 as an Alternate Consideration.
What the Alternate Consideration means is if the top 32 call is not filled, an alternate consideration may fill a spot, if they are present and desire to participate when the call is made.
Gaspar and Warren also get spots in the girls long jump event, Gaspar getting No. 23 and Warren No. 24 with their individual leaps of 16.00.25.
Following Sarmiento in the boys long jump, Waimea’s Henry Delos Reyes gets the No. 16 nod on his 20-07.50 leap. The situation flip-flops in the boys triple jump where Delos Reyes is No. 13 on a 41-11 leap and Sarmiento gets the No. 27 nod on his 40-9.50 jump. Sarmiento is the sole KIF jumper in the boys high jump, ranking No. 7 on his 6-00.50 jump.
Kalani Lemalu of Kauai High School is the sole KIF student-athlete in the throwing events, Lemalu getting the No. 23 nod in the boys discus throw with his toss of 129-00.
Kauai’s Jordan Ganam, a junior, comes in at No. 13 in the girls 100 meter dash on a 12.96 run followed by Waimea’s Kaena Kaohelaulii getting the nod at No. 18 on her 13.04 run.
On the boys’ 100 meter dash, Waimea’s Lopaka Ventura leads the KIF pack at No. 13 on an 11.21 run followed by team mate Destin Miguel getting the No. 19 spot on an 11.30 run and Sarmiento rounding out the field at No. 30 on an 11.44 run.
Emanuel Zafirides of Island School is the sole KIF listing in the boys 400 meter dash at No. 23 on a 52.46 run. Kauai’s Charles Samuel, a junior, gets the No. 28 spot in the boys 800 meter run on his 2:05.71 clocked at the KIF championships. Miguel is the sole KIF runner in the boys 200 meter dash at No. 25 on his 23.25 run. Michael Miller of Island School is also the sole KIF runner in the 3,000 meter run at No. 30 on his 9:58.41 run.
KIF relay teams also are acknowledged, the Kauai girls 4×100 meter relay team getting No. 22 at 52.99 followed by Waimea 4×100 relay team coming at No. 25 on a 53.41 run.
Kauai girls 4×400 relay team come in at No. 23 on a 4:26.34 run followed by Waimea girls 4×400 relay team at 4:29.16. On the boys track, Kauai boys 4×400 relay team gets a No. 26 nod at 3:41.99 followed by the Island School boys 4×400 relay team at No. 34 on a 3:48.20 run as an Altenate Consideration. Waimea Boys 4×400 relay team at 3:52.12 was scratched.
