KAPAA — Saxsen Shiira fired off a balanced 14 points to lead the Kauai Ballers, Division 2 boys basketball team to a 41-16 win over Westside Basketball Tuesday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa.
Following Shiira, the Kauai Ballers got solid support from Chysen Barretto (8 points), Mikela Matayoshi, Morris Unutoa (6 points each), and Lester Manique (5 points) in the win.
The Westside Division 2 boys were led by Irish Pascua, who netted a game-high nine points with Mar Cadiz and Zech Ponting each adding three marks.
The Division 2 boys basketball features players in grades 8 and 9 and is just one part of the Kaulupono Summer Basketball league which opened last week with games in Kalaheo and Kapaa.
Bryce Johnson-Comack fired his game-total 11 points in the first half to lead Team Central to a 38-28 edge over the tenacious Hanakila, a team comprised of players primarily from the Hanalei and Kilauea areas.
Triston Hawelu took the lead for Hanakila, and like Johnson-Comack, fired off his game-total 10 points in the first half.
Noah Rall coughed up four second-half points, Lexton Camat and Daniel Yabes each finished with three points.
On the Team Central side, Joseph Cumlat added seven points, Michael Dasalia finished with six and Demetrio Castillo ended with five points.
Games move to the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center and the Kapaa High School gym, Thursday when the Division 1 boys, players in grades 10 through 12, WBC-A take on Hanakila starting at 6 p.m. followed by the Division 1 girls, Pono Gold take on the Kamikaze at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m. The nightcap of the triple bill features the Division 2 boys Hanakila going up against Team Lihue.
Over at the Kapaa High School campus, the Division 2 boys Kauai Ballers square off against Team Central starting at 6 p.m. followed by the Division 1 girls Kauai Ballers taking on Waimea.
Games are usually played on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through July 12.
The Kaulupono Summer Basketball League features three Division 1 boys basketball teams, five Division 1 girls basketball teams.
Division 2 boys have three teams from the West and three teams from the East.
Division 3, or players in grades 6 and 7, features seven boys teams and four girls teams.
Division 4, or players in grades 4 and 5, feature seven boys teams and four girls teams.
