NAWILIWILI — Shale Ame, director of the Kauai Sailing Association, said they will be sailing all summer.
Ame, with the help of Melissa Burovac, presented 17 graduates of the KSA sailing course Friday during the final day of the weeklong sailing class for youth ages 7 through 16.
“These young people can sail so well,” Ame said. “We have 17 graduates and 12 new sailors.”
KSA, with the support of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club, offers a Learn to Sail course for small boat sailors.
During the course, the new sailors were confined to the waters of Nawiliwili Harbor using Topper sailboats. On the final day of class, Risa Whetsel, one of the KSA sailors who participated in the Slim Lambert Youth Invitational on Oahu in May, took several of the new sailors on the Vanguard 420.
Ame said KSA will be offering intermediate sailing classes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 7-11. Sailing classes for beginners will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21-25 for students ages 7 through 16 years old.
“We also have adult classes,” Ame said. “People are always welcome to join the classes.”
