KALAHEO — Monique Lorenzo fired up a game-high 17 points and Taegan Keep came up with 12 points to lead Kaulupono Gold ahead of Waimea, 30-25 Monday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
The victory earned them the crown of the Kaulupono Summer Basketball league girls division 1, or grades 10 through 12.
Junard Mata finished with a game-high 28 points to keep Hanakila, comprised of players primarily from the Hanalei and Kilauea area, division 1 boys ahead of WMC-A, a Westside team, 30-25 in the nightcap.
The Hanakila win, coached by Jerome Hawkins, earned the team the division 1 boys crown.
Earlier in the evening, Tori Daligcon-Pomaikai bucketed 23 points and Tamare Daligcon-Pomaikai added 10 points to lead the Kapaa Ballers, division 1 girls to a 56-14 win over the Kamikaze for third place in the division.
Tori led the Ballers from the onset, dropping 10 points toward the team’s 26 first-half points. She got support from five other players, including Angelica Cudiamat bombing one of two three-balls in the game.
Tamare added the second trey in the second half en route to her 10 points.
After being limited to just four points in the first half, including a pair from the team’s leading scorer Ayzlin Kealoha-Albarado, the Kamikaze came alive in the second half. Kealoha-Albarado lead the charge behind the sole trey from the redshirts.
Following her lead, Chyna Hanano, Melanie Matsunaga and Britney Ehia each dropped a pair.
Lorenzo, in the girls division 1 title game, was the sole scorer for Kaulupono Gold in the first half, dropping a three ball and ending the half with a 1-for-4 showing on the charity stripe.
The scenario changed in the second half as Lorenzo was limited to just free throws, ending 7-for-8 at the stripe including five coming in the final minute when Kaulupono pulled ahead for good and her final pair iced the win with just .7 second left on the clock.
Keep, after being double-teamed and pressured throughout the night, came up with her dozen points in the second half of the physical match.
Brandee Burton and Schae-Marie Tavita set the pace for Waimea with six points apiece as Waimea coach set up different lineups that changed on the floor throughout the night.
