KALAHEO — As part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the garden announces a special Saturday showing of its current exhibition “The Living Forest Birds of Hawaii” by Marian Berger and a lecture on Kauai’s native forest birds by Dr. Lisa “Cali” Crampton.
This one-day opening is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Botanical Research Center at NTBG headquarters. At 11 a.m.,Crampton, leader of the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project, will present a talk entitled “Hawaii’s Forest Birds: Rise and Fall of Biodiversity” in the adjacent education center. Those arriving at 10 a.m. will have the opportunity to view the paintings prior to attending the talk.
Included in the exhibit’s watercolors are forest birds that are found nowhere else on Earth but Hawaii, including the island of Kauai. The threat to these species and the efforts to save them led to the creation of the paintings, and Crampton’s presentation on such endangered birds as the federally listed ‘akikiki (Kauai creeper) will carry the message of the importance of these delicate creatures in maintaining balance in their ecosystems.
