LIHUE — The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is giving away three 60-watt equivalent Light Emitting Diode bulbs valued at more than $30 to Kauai residents.
The giveaway, coordinated through the KIUC Energy Services division, will start June 27 at the Kukui Grove Center food court area from 6 to 7:30 p.m. KIUC representatives will also be available on July 25, and Aug. 22 for the giveaway.
A KIUC release states that if you are still using old incandescent bulbs, you are wasting money.
Replacing those old bulbs with LED bulbs, shown to be even better than the compact flourescent lamps which have become popular, will save on a person’s electric bill as well as help Kauai reach its renewable energy goals whil helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“Most stores sell these bulbs for between $10 and $15 each which is why many people haven’t made the switch,” said Kathy Williams, KIUC Energy Services supervisor. “Because we are a cooperative, we’re all about serving our members which is why KIUC is giving these bulbs away for free to help reduce members’ monthly electric bills.”
LED bulbs use less energy than incandescent, or CFL bulbs with the added benefit of staying cool to the touch. LED bulbs are designed to last more than 20 years.
Williams said the sooner people start using an LED bulb, the sooner savings will take place.
