LIHUE — In typical fashion, the “Garden Isle” found its way onto yet another Top 10 list.
This time, readers of USA Today and 10Best ranked Kauai as the No. 8 “Best U.S. Island” — the lone Hawaiian island to make the cut.
“Kauai, Hawaii’s ‘Garden Island,’ enjoys some of the most dramatic natural scenery in the country, from the deep gorges of Waimea Canyon to the verdant cliffs and plunging waterfalls of the spectacular Napali coast,” USA Today wrote. “And then we get to the beaches — 50 miles worth and each as beautiful as the last. Just off its shores, a colorful underwater world attracts snorkelers and divers from around the globe.”
Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kauai Visitors Bureau, welcomed the recognition.
“The USA Today polls show the popularity of our destination and the acknowledgement of our incredible natural scenery,” she said. “Mahalo nui loa to all those who took the time to vote for Kauai.”
Atop the USA Today list was Puerto Rico, followed by Mackinac, Mich., Whidbey Island, Wash., Mount Desert, Maine, Amelia Island, Fla., Assateague Island, Va. / Md. and Dauphin Island, Ala.
Behind Kauai in the rankings were Block Island, R.I. and Hilton Head, S.C.
Kauai is no stranger to tips of the hat or accolades. In 2013, it earned a No. 2 ranking on TripAdvisor’s list of the 10 best islands in the United States, as well as Travel and Leisure magazine’s list of world’s best islands in its 2013 World’s Best Awards.
The state of Hawaii is one of 20 destinations currently in the running for USA Today’s Top 10 Wedding Destinations. To vote in the poll by June 30, visit www.10best.com.
