LIHUE – Contractors working on the new Hokulei Village shopping center will be closing a portion of Nuhou Street between Kaumualii Highway and Kaneka Street to begin construction on a new roundabout that will service traffic in the area.
Maryl Group Construction will close Nuhou Road in front of Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School beginning Monday and lasting to July 31. It will re-open prior to the commencement of the 2014-15 school year on Aug. 1. The closure will allow the contractor to make significant progress on the roundabout while school is out of session.
“We are all concerned about heavy construction in the area while school is in session and there is significant vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area,” stated County Engineer Larry Dill. “Allowing the closure during the summer will alleviate these safety concerns and allow for a more timely completion of the project.”
During the closure, crosswalks will be relocated, the speed limit in the area will be reduced to 15 miles per hour and marked detours will be in place.
