King Kamehameha might not have conquered Kauai, but that did not stop hundreds of people from celebrating the Hawaiian ruler Saturday during the King Kamehameha floral parade and hoolaulea.
The Royal Order of Kamehameha — initiated in 1904 following the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893 — followed the initial float where Thomas Keolaikepapaplua Jr. portrayed King Kamehameha.
In order, Hawaiian organizations, including the Kaahumanu Society and Hale O Na Alii O Hawaii Halau O Kapiolani, presented the regal protocol of the days before Hawaii became a territory of the United States.
The royalty was joined by hula halau, government dignitaries, and other community groups as the parade ended at the hoolaulea at the Historic County Building where spectators were greeted by crafters, vendors, food and a string of entertainment.
Melissa Sugai, the interim commissioner for the Kamehameha Celebration Commission, spearheaded the day’s events.
