The All Saints’ Church is hosting a free futsal tournament— more commonly known as indoor soccer — from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday at its gym in Kapaa.
The first All Saints’ Indoor Sports Futsal Tournament will be divided into two separate divisions with youth under 13 and youth under 17 taking the floor from noon until 4 p.m. The adult division will go from 4:30 until 8:30 p.m. According to rules posted on All Saints’ website, younger skilled players can play up in any age bracket.
“Since my son, Shane Nishioka-Healy, a soccer player for Kapaa High School before graduating, came home from college, he was dying to do a futsal tournament,” said Sybil Nishioka of the All Saints’ Church. “I managed to scrape up some funding for a small tournament. If kids can play soccer, they can play futsal.”
Nishioka-Healy, the founder of the popular Fun in Fellowship Dodgeball Tournament at the church, said there are teams from the South Side and Westside who practices futsal at the Kato Gym in Kalaheo, led by Michelle Alimboyoguen.
She said on the Eastside and North Shore, Mytra McKeough, Kevin Cram and Steve Devin are putting together teams with most of the younger players practicing. All Saints’ Gym, 4-1065 Kuhio Highway also hosts practices Monday and Thursday nights.
