KALAHEO — High school aged basketball players tore up the floor at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center Monday during the Kaulupono Summer Basketball League.
Three games, all Division 1, or players in grades 10 through 12, resonated off the walls of the gym. Waimea girls took the first of three games 38-0 over Kaulupono-Blue.
“The girls in Pono-Blue should be playing in Division 2, or players in grades 8 and 9,” said Bobby Kamakele, Kaulupono coach and commissioner for the summer league. “But there aren’t enough teams in that grade level, so like Keven Hanano’s Kamikaze, made up mostly of freshmen, the girls play up.”
Malyssa Manera, a player with Kauai High School, led the Waimea scoring with nine points, getting help from Lauren Lagoc who netted eight points, and Brandee Burton dropping six points in the shutout.
Paea Tafea and Tori Daligcon-Pomaikai, both standouts for Kapaa High School during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls basketball season, set the pace for the Kauai Ballers in its 39-11 win over the Kamikaze.
Tafea led the win with 12 points followed by Daligcon-Pomaikai who added 10 points.
The Kamikaze came from a 19-4 first half deficit, Ayzlin Kealoha-Albarado adding five points in the second half to her first-half pair for seven points in the effort. Sheryl Tomas finished with four points.
Junard Mata fired a game-high 15 points to lead Hanakila from an 18-17 halftime lead to a 46-31 win over the WMC-A in the finale.
Seaton Farias and Jamin Fernandez led the WMC-A effort on 12 and 10 points, respectively.
