The fourth annual Red Eye Science Shipwreck Challenge will unfold at 7:30 a.m. Friday and continue through Sunday in Poipu.
The Red Eye Clothing and Hawaii International Bodyboarding Association Tour is partnering to host Kauai’s first bodyboarding Pro/Am competition, the event listed as part of the Hawaii IBA Tour.
Between 60 to 70 people, out of a field of 80, already registered for the professional division at Shipwreck’s Beach.
The amateur divisions will have 6:30 a.m. registration and the competition will start at 7:45 a.m.
Registration fees are $35 and an addition $20 for the am division, $120 plus membership for the pro division and $50 for the short board pro division.
Amateur event sign-ups can be done at Soul Lei in Kapaa, Rambla in Waimea or Da Life at Kalapaki Beach.
With nearly 70 riders in the pro division, Kauai has been waiting for this event, said Meghan Matsuda, owner of All Red Eye Clothing, in a release.
“Every year, we throw a bodyboarding competition to help kids pursue their passion instead of drugs by getting red-eye’d from surfing all day, skating all night or even hitting the books,” Matsuda said. “Our competition is growing bigger and we are excited to give Kauai some light.”
Prizes for the pro division consist of entry money spread out to the top winners.
Prizes for the amateur division consist of boards, clothing, hats, gift certificates, skateboards, and a Go Pro from Da Life Outdoor Gear.
Prizes total more than $5,000 and each division will have an opportunity to win a science board, or a Hubboard.
“We’re stoked,” said Matsuda. “You can tell Kauai boarders have been waiting for an opportunity to spong in the pro tour and not having to spend an arm and a leg to travel to the other islands.”
