KOLOA — Members of the Hui Malama o Kaneiolouma will offer an introduction to their efforts of restoring the area while recounting the history of Poipu, Tuesday afternoon starting at 4:30 p.m.
The presentation is a new facet of the Koloa Plantation Days celebration which launched on Friday and continues through Sunday with a calendar of family-friendly events celebrating the plantation heritage and history of Koloa and Poipu.
The passage of the remnants of Tropical Storm Wali took its toll on the weekend’s activities as the scheduled Mini Golf Tournament at the Lawai Beach Resort was cancelled.
Organizers of the Charity Keiki Tennis Summer Challenge worked feverishly between windows of rain squalls and wind to complete the two-day event at the Poipu Kai tennis courts.
“They should have at least had the announcement on the radio,” lamented the grandmother of Kiana and Nalani Reed of Maryland who stared at the event cancellation notice.
Dianne and Greg Meboe of Seattle, Washington were also sorry the event was cancelled, but made the best of the situation.
“We were able to get in two rounds,” Dianne said. “Instead of watching, we were able to play as a family for free.”
Dianne said their children, Isabelle, Oscar, and Joey have registered for the Ukes in Paradise event, Sunday at Keoki’s Paradise, and will be taking in the Plantation Cooking at the Kauai Culinary Market, Wednesday.
Melissa McFerrin, the event coordinator, said Violet Asuncion and her family haven’t been home for two nights, getting ready for the Mixed Plate event at the Old Koloa Town courtyard.
“She’s got a voice like an angel,” said Amber the Mermaid who made an appearance at Island Style Activities operated by Susie Purdy.
Marjolaine Rodier of Montreal, Canada said mermaids are the favorite of her daughter, Charlie Dubreil, who shyly accepted a stick-on tattoo of a mermaid from Amber during her visit.
“This wasn’t here last year,” Purdy said, noting the mermaid was part of Mixed Plate. “We have a variety of activities for people, and also, half of the shop is divided to offer uniquely Kauai-made products.”
The Koloa Plantation Days celebration is highlighted by the annual historic parade which starts at 10 a.m., Saturday and is followed by the park celebration featuring the talents of Led Kaapana and Mike Kaawa and more.
