POIPU — Kim Medeiros topped the Goat Tying event and picked up a Fast Time in the Steer Undecorating event to help her land All Around Cowgirl honors at the Kauai All Girls Rodeo Association event at the CJM Country Stables.
Medeiros totalled 37 points and edged out Cora Murayama who finished with 30 points for Reserve All Around Cowgirl honors.
Medeiros, riding Lehua, settled for a third place in the First D of the 3D Barrel Racing on a 18.581 second go, compared with the first and second finishes by the daughter and mother team of Cheyanne Tannery (18.060) and Wendy Tannery (18.275).
“It’s almost always that way,” said Tammy Puu, who despite running the course, did not make the leaderboard. “Cheyanne finished second during the state rodeo on the Big Island and will be going to the Nationals later in the month.”
Joining Cheyanne on the trip to Wyoming, Cheyenne Andrade, who earned the Hawaii State Rodeo Queen title during the Big Island rodeo, will also be participating in the Nationals.
Sunday, Andrade topped the Second D of the Barrel Racing on a 19.632 go, edging out Elise Silva by .063 second. She also finished second in the Third D of the 3D Pole Bending event on a 25.513 go. Andrade rounded out her day with a fourth finish in the Dally Team Roping event, heading for heeler Shannie Wong on a 12.04 single go.
Medeiros continued to improve through the order of events, finishing second in the Second D of the 3D Pole Bending event on a 24.574 go aboard Ani, being edged out of the top spot by Murayama who clocked a 24.243 go.
These two events served as warm-ups for the KAGRA Rodeo Secretary as Medeiros roared to a first finish in the Goat Tying event on a 21.929 average over the efforts of Kristyn Vasconcelles (22.290) and Kira Pimental (23.215), Vasconcelles getting Fast Time in the event at 9.728.
During the Steer Undecorating, Medeiros finished fifth in the event on a 15.51 average, but copped Fast Time honors on a 2.28 go.
Murayama topped this event with a 6.67 average, bettering Robin Medeiros (10.654), Kristen Low (12.64), and Kira Pimental (14.75).
Murayama rounded out the day with a third finish in the Breakaway Roping on an 11.80 average, being bettered by Marti Snyder who topped the event at a 9.78 average and Kira Pimental (10.88) who copped Fast Time honors on a 3.98 go.
Medeiros rounded out her day as heeler for Alexis Vasconcelles in the Dally Team event, the pair getting third place honors on an 11.03 single go.
The next KAGRA rodeo will be the final event for the girls on its 2014 calendar, starting at 10 a.m. at the CJM Country Stables in Poipu.
There is no charge to view the all-girl competition and a lunchwagon is available.
