WAILUA — Kelly Braun said the Able Ministries children had a full plate Friday.
“They’re doing the day camp at the Healing Horses this morning,” said Braun, who was helping Dylan Wasano with his horseback ride. “Tonight, they’ll be at the ‘Come As You Are’ youth rally.”
Ellane Kato, one of the Able Ministries’ day campers was ecstatic, unable to contain a hearty “Yee-hah!” as she settled onto her mount at the Healing Horses facility in Wailua.
“They are the important ones,” said Heather Phillips, director of Healing Horses. “This is the second year they’ve brought 20 of their members for the day camp experience.”
Ana Munoz, an Able Ministries leader, said this year the group comes as Able Ministries under the Lihue Missionary Church, the program headed by Matt and Amanda Phillips.
“We have about 30 members who are disabled, but for the day camp we limited the number to 20,” Munoz said. “This is an experience for them with sessions in horseback riding, ponies, grooming and care for horses, crafts and games.”
Healing Horses also has a program where miniature horses are brought over to the Samuel Mahelona Memorial and Kauai Veterans Memorial hospitals, where they spend time interacting with elderly residents.
