1 year jail and probation for stolen ring
LIHUE — A Kapaa man was sentenced to probation and a year in jail on Wednesday in 5th Circuit Court for pawning a stolen ring.
Jacob Mahuka, 23, appeared in custody having already been sentenced to a year in jail with probation for another second-degree theft charge by Chief Judge Valenciano on July 10.
Judge Kathleen Watanabe followed suit and sentenced Mahuka to four years of close supervision for high-risk offenders under HOPE probation (Hawaii’s Opportunity Probation with Enforcement), along with the maximum one-year jail term allowable with the probation.
County Second Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Vogt said Mahuka was arrested for first-degree burglary and second-degree theft on Dec. 6, 2013.
He had pawned a ring valued at $800 by the owner, who had reported it stolen from her residence in May 2013.
Mahuka pleaded no contest to second-degree theft on May 5.
Watanabe ordered Mahuka to pay $57.79 in restitution to the pawn dealer.
She also issued a stay-away order from the victim in the case.
Meth charge results in jail time
LIHUE — An Eleele woman was sent to jail for a year with probation for a methamphetamine charge on Thursday in 5th Circuit Court.
In her statement to the court, Monique Liane Uilani Naholoholo, 41, apologized to her family and the community.
Chief Judge Randal Valenciano said it was some time since her last offense, but added Naholoholo has had the benefit of probation already, along with jail time.
He ordered one-year jail with a four-year probation, noting his concern over allegations that the defendant was selling drugs.
“You might have been staying out of trouble or or you just didn’t get caught,” Valenciano said.
County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jennifer Winn, said a police search of Naholoholo’s vehicle on June 4, 2012, resulted in charges of possessing methamphetamine, hashish and marijuana.
Naholoholo pleaded no contest to the methamphetamine charge on May 12.
Waimea pool closed for emergency repair work
LIHUE — The Waimea swimming pool closed Thursday for emergency work, including electrical repairs and new pump installation.
The pool is expected to reopen next week after work is completed.
“Hopefully when the pumps and the electrical are done, it’s not just a Band-Aid, but it will be fixed,” said Jeremy Haupt, a lifeguard supervisor at the Waimea and Kapaa swimming pools.
