LIHUE — A man who was to be transferred from his transitional home and brought to Kauai Community Correctional Center Tuesday night ran away from corrections officers.
Tyson Yadao, 25, an extended furlough inmate, was sentenced in 2010 to 10 years in prison for burglary and assaulting a police officer.
He ran from officers at the Lihue home about 8:30 p.m., according to the Department of Public Safety, and was still at large Wednesday afternoon.
Yadao is 5 feet, 9 inches tall and has brown hair, brown eyes and weighs 210 pounds.
Hawaii Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz said Yadao was already living and working out in the community with a custody status that classifies him as low risk and made him eligible for an extended furlough program.
“But as with any furlough walkaway, we don’t know the frame of mind of the person when they decide to run,” Schwartz said. “Police were notified. It’s best for people to not approach him and call 911 if they see him.”
Yadao started his sentence at KCCC and then spent about two years at an Arizona institution. After returning to KCCC in May 2013, the state Paroling Authority recommended a work furlough in June before considering parole.
The intent of furloughs are designed to transition inmates out into the community slowly and prepare them to be self-sufficient.
According to the DPS, Yadao had violated a condition of the work furlough program. It is not known if this was a minor or a severe violation. No matter the violation, the inmate exits the program and returns to KCCC.
The matter remains under investigation and Yadao faces an additional escape charge.
