The seedlings just didn’t make it for the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair, said Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes, Saturday.
Instead, the Yellow Granex onion starts were distributed Saturday in front of the Waimea First Hawaiian Bank and the Eleele Shopping Center where Jeff Emoto joined Russell Nonaka in passing out packets to home gardeners.
Susan Tai Kaneko of Syngenta said they provide space for Bunga and the Waimea High School agriculture students plant the seeds, and once growing, Kaneko said they are considering a contest for various categories for the onions (don’t cover the bulbs, Bunga said).
Katsumi “Gutsy” Oyama was really good at recruiting onion growers, and Bunga said they even have recipes developed by Susan for what to do with the onions when they ready for harvest.
OK, time to go see who’s going to the Lihue United Church of Christ Labor Day Breakfast (King Auto Center is open from 8 a.m., so they might be there, too).
