That is the reason Elizabeth Scamahorn and Cory Balsom will be at the helm of a free literacy workshop, under the umbrella of the Jeanne Warburton Literacy Clinic of Kauai and co-sponsored by the Hawaii International Dyslexia Association.
The education proponents believe literacy is important for effective communication for keiki.
“I have a passion for it,” Scamahorn said. “Kauai has multi-cultural homes and our language reflects that.”
The one-hour free workshop will include a demonstration, explanation, parent surveys. It is designed for parents of third through 12th graders in regular education who have children who may be struggling with reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and comprehension.
The question Scamahorn poses to parents is, “Can your child communicate in English that reflects their age appropriateness?”
In the workshop, they intend to explain the signs of dyslexia, a developmental reading disorder.
“What we aim to do is to help parents be aware of holes in language acquisition that may trip up students when it comes to writing a paper or reading an essay or a newspaper article,” Scamahorn said.
The “Literacy information for panicked parents,” workshop will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Island School.
