Highway costs make bike path seem like a good deal
We can all be very proud that we, who live in Hawaii, are many times No. 1 at lots of things. The latest top spot, according to a Sept. 18 TGI story, is that we have the worst highways in the country! Well, I hope not too much money was spent on that study. Anyone who has ever traveled outside of this state could have told us that. I also believe Kauai County has the worst highways in the state.
It only gets better. Hawaii spent $90,000 (yes, $90,000) on administrative costs per year, per mile, of state highways. Texas spent $4,000 and Kentucky spent $1,000. Please, someone from the state highway system, write in and explain why we get No. 1 for worst highways and No. 1 for most money spent per mile.

With regard to the letter to the editor written by Dr. Stephen Saponaro about getting a speeding ticket while on vacation here, it’s unsettling that an educated person would write something so very odd. And with regard to thanking readers for our “attention to the matter,” my question is … attention to what?
Feeling sorry for someone who doesn’t observe speed limit signs in a residential neighborhood? Rather than accept any personal responsibility for his behavior, the writer blames everyone other than himself — the operator of the car. That’s a rather juvenile position for an adult to take. Despite his bad luck and my lack of sympathy for it, I hope that Dr. Saponaro rethinks his position about not coming back to Kauai, because we welcome visitors here with open arms. The problem for visitors who choose to ignore traffic laws is that some of those open arms are holding traffic radar devices.
