LIHUE — Those seeking shelter on Kauai may be getting a little extra help thanks to efforts from the Easter Seals and the Zonta Club of Kauai.
“If you’re homeless and we help find you a shelter, we also give you one of these gift boxes,” Kauai Economic Opportunity Chief Executive Office MaBel Ferreiro-Fujiuchi said on Sunday, when more than 30 people, including Zonta Club members, their guests, and other volunteers packed and wrapped gift boxes containing a variety of household items that people need to set up a home.
The service project was done under the Weinberg Friends program, where the Zonta Club, in performing a service project meeting certain criteria, could designate the recipient of a $10,000 award from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. The Easter Seals of Hawaii, Kauai, was selected as the beneficiary of the Zonta service project, said Ellen Ching and Carla Baker, who represented the Easter Seals.
Ching said the Easter Seals will be using the funds to acquire iPads for its adult division because studies have shown the benefits of using the electronic devices as a learning tool.
The award will be also shared for parent support on the early intervention area of Easter Seals.
Mike Wills of Livermore, California was one of those service project volunteers on Saturday.
“He comes here every year to golf,” Ferreiro-Fujiuchi’s husband, Brian Fujiuchi, said. “I asked him if he was doing anything, and he said he could come help. Last year, I think he helped the Zonta Club when they worked at the Kauai Habitat for Humanity project, too.”
