KALALAU – A 57-year-old man from Soquel, Calif. was reported injured Friday night on the Kalalau Trail near Hanakoa. The report was made by a hiker who called Police Dispatch around 7:22 p.m. after hiking out of Kalalau Valley.
Since darkness had al- ready set in, the injured man and his family spent the night in the valley. Rescue specialists aboard Air 1 flew
in to Kalalau Valley at ap- proximately 7:11 a.m. Satur- day morning, picked up the injured man and brought him to Princeville Airport.
After turning the man over to Hanalei firefighters, the man declined further as- sistance.
He told the firefighters that he would seek medical help when he goes to Oahu.
Saturday morning around 9:53 a.m., Rescue 3 and two firefighters from the Kapaa station responded to an inci-
dent along the Wailua River. A 51-year-old San Diego woman on a kayak tour had
sustained injuries after slid- ing down a 10-foot embank- ment and into the stream.
The Kapaa firefighters were the first to arrive on scene. After assessing the sit- uation, the decision was made to use Air 1 for the res- cue. So the rescue specialists flew in on Air 1 and short- hauled the injured woman to a clearing across from the Opaekaa Falls parking lot.
From there, Medic 21 transported the woman to Wilcox Hospital.
About 3-1/2 hours later, an- other rescue call through, and Rescue 3 and firefighters from the Kapaa station re- sponded.
A 51-year-old woman from Tempe, AZ had slipped and fallen and injured her left an- kle while bicycling with her husband along the Kuilau Trail in Wailua Homesteads.
The Kapaa firefighters ar- rived on scene first and the
rescue specialists arrived shortly afterward.
A Stokes litter with a wheel was used to bring the injured woman out.
When they arrived at the Kuilau Trail parking lot, the couple declined ambulance service and opted to drive themselves to Wilcox Hospi- tal for further treatment.
The rescue specialists fol- lowed the couple to the hos- pital and rolled the injured woman on a gurney into the emergency room.
