LIHUE — Colby Barth, Boy Scout with Troop 133 in Kapaa, set out to complete his National Heritage and Aviation merit badges this weekend.
Mission accomplished.
“It’s his first two merit badges,” said Heather Barth, Colby’s mom. “He just joined the troop two weeks ago.”
Colby was part of 22 Boy Scouts from three troops who participated in an overnight encampment on Oahu to earn the two merit badges. The group returned to Kauai Sunday evening.
“This is the first time we’ve coordinated something like this,” said Devi Berg, a team mother from BSA Troop 148. “It’s like three trips in one because we had 14 scouts from Troop 148, and four each from Troops 133 and 334.”
Scouts left Kauai Saturday. They visited the Pacific Aviation museum, the USS Missouri and spent the evening camped out on the historic battleship. A side trip took the Scouts to the USS Arizona Memorial.
“My great-grandfather served on the Missouri,” said Ayden Quinn of Troop 334. “When I was aboard the ship, I thought about him.”
Scoutmaster Lyle Tabata said it was a good experience for the Scouts because while visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, they met veterans who talked about how they got their start as Boy Scouts.
“This was a fun trip,” said Maceo Cantu, a Scout with Troop 334. “It was a good experience for the boys to learn from all the people.”
