KAUMAKANI — Wednesday is the showdown for the lead in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation air riflery season at the Kaumakani Neighborhood Center.
Waimea High School, with its sweep over Island School last week, picked up its second win and will host Kauai High School, who also picked up its second win with victories over Kapaa High School last week.
Both teams are 2-0 on the season and will face off starting at 3 p.m.
“I didn’t like the echo,” said Emma Schneck, a first-year shooter for Island School, describing the conditions at the Kaumakani Neighborhood Center. “There was no wind.”
But that did not deter the Voyagers from putting up identical 971-point scores for both its girls and boys teams during its match against Waimea.
The effort fell short as Waimea girls took an 1,157-971 win for the girls and a 1078-971 victory for the boys, led by Quiana Duarte netting a 240 (89 prone, 71 standing, 80 kneeling), and John Anthony Prado nailing a 234 (85-67-82), respectively.
“I couldn’t shoot this week because my arm hurts,” said Robyn Acob, a second-year Waimea shooter. “But I had to come and support. Last week, I had a 241.”
Following Duarte, Tiffany Minia ended with a 229 (88-68-73) followed by Melia Takakusagi (90-72-75-237), Kayla Ishida (80-66-82-228) and Hope Coyaso (85-63-75-223). Other Menehune ladies on the line included Karla Bermudez (80-57-55-192), Janine Prado (84-58-76-218) and Chelsea Samatra (86-46-71-203).
“Overall, I did a lot better than last week,” said Amanda Nyugen, an Island School returning shooter. “My scores were better than what I shot last week.”
Nyugen led the Voyager women with a 218 (81-67-70) followed by Abby Johnson (76-49-74-199), Deanna Sloger (78-35-76-189), Aliana Ho (80-43-62-185) and Ashley Silvestre (69-40-71-180). Other Voyager women on the line included Schneck (55-41-51-147) and Ariana Wilson (71-42-56-169).
Island School will be hosting the Kapaa Warriors at 3 p.m.
